Early-Fall Tree Care Tips
Preparing trees for the winter should be happening in early Fall. They will also end up thriving next Spring! Preventative maintenance and good practices in the fall boost trees’ health and well-being during the winter and creates a promising environment to promote healthy trees in the Spring. Keep your trees happy and healthy all year-round! Here are some things to know about getting your trees ready for Fall.
Look for pruning issues
After the leaves are on the ground is the time to plan for pruning your trees. You can see the branches better after the leaves have fallen. Try to remove an dead or dying branches so that you create a healthy tree. These are not essential to the tree anymore.
Feeding Your Trees
Tree roots tend to grow more in the Fall. The system of roots stores energy for the tree to use later on. They use a lot of this energy in the spring when they start to flower and produce leaves once again. New growth in the spring can happen when the soil sustains nutrient levels and helping the production of roots in the tree. Supplemental feeding is very beneficial to younger and newly planted trees. However, not all trees need or demand fertilization.
Complete cultural practices
Giving tree roots some added protection during the winter can help a lot. Consider remulching around your trees. This also helps with the moisture levels in the soil over the winter when the air is dry. Having 2-3 inches of composted mulch on top of where the roots are gives excellent protection. You may also want to add protective wraps on trees with thin bark or your recently planted trees.
The dry air and lack of rain can occur during the fall and early winter. This can take a toll on trees. Provide some irrigation to the roots to help them through this time of year. You should only water when temperatures are above 40-degree water around middle of the day so the roots have time to soak it in. Applying around 5 gallons of water per inch of the tree’s diameter will be enough when there is a lack of rain as winter approaches.
