Everything You Need to Know About Removing Branches from Power Lines
In New England or anywhere in the Northeast, it seems that our inclement weather is always having some unfortunate interactions with our power lines and our trees. This can not only cause inconvenient or even dangerous power outages, but it can also cause quite extensive damage to power systems and road blockages that prevent transportation.
If you are on a property with a large amount of trees, or this is happening frequently to your and your family, you might be tempted to try and remove the trees from the power lines.
What Should I Do if a Tree Falls on My Power Line?
Under no circumstances should you try and remove a branch or tree from a power line by yourself. Power companies have employees that are specifically trained to do this and have special equipment to protect them from electrical shock. Don’t risk your own safety to move a branch, the electric company is responsible for these trees as well as the wire from the pole to your home.
Who is Responsible for Trimming Trees Near Power Lines?
Your electric utility company or power company is responsible for trimming the trees near the power lines. This is a requirement of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), which has been adopted by most states. However you still have a responsibility to take care of the trees on other areas of your property.
How Can I Prevent Power Outages?
The best way to prevent future power outages is to properly trim the trees on your property before they have a chance to fall on a power line. Although the electric company is responsible for trimming trees right next to the power lines, they don’t usually focus on preventative measures and are likely to service the area only once the damage has been done. Taller trees from other areas of your property could also cause interference and aren’t necessarily the responsibility of the power company.
