Caring For Your Newly Hydroseeded Lawn

If your lawn has been recently hydroseeded, you need to learn how to take care of it properly. Getting it to thrive within the first few weeks of being planted is how you’ll keep it looking its best for months to come!

Proper Watering

After your lawn is first hydroseeded, allow the mulch to dry over the next day before watering it. During the first two weeks of having the hydroseed, water all areas of the lawn every day, keeping everything slightly moist to speed up the germination. Water for 10 to 20 minutes per section, twice a day, if you possibly can. Be sure to limit the watering time if you are causing run-off damage. Try not to water if heavy rain is predicted within the next 12 hours because you don’t want to over-water. When the daytime temperature is 85 degrees or higher with high humidity, do not water day or night until the temperature drops below 85 degrees. Allow the area to remain dry. During extreme heat conditions, you can end up “cooking” the grass and promote fungus growth by watering. In more shady areas, allow the mulch to dry out between watering after you have mowed the lawn once and water less often while increasing the amount of watering time. This tactic will promote deeper root growth. A hydroseeded lawn should receive 1″ to 2″ of water each week.

Mowing

Mow the grass as soon as needed and allow the area to dry out before mowing. Cut your grass on a high setting to keep the grass cooler and weed seeds from germinating and try not to cut off more than 1/3 of the grass when mowing. It will most likely be necessary to mow twice a week in the beginning because growth will come in fast. Constant mowing promotes root growth and kills many of the weeds. You don’t have to pick up the clippings unless the grass cuttings are smothering the new grass.

Fertilizing

With Dudley’s, we will do all the follow-up fertilizing and washout repairs if you have a sprinkler system, water every other day in the early morning. This promotes deeper root growth. If you water with a hose, water 2 hours each section (2 times per week preferred.) There are 2-hour timers available at local hardware stores allowing you to start the watering without worrying about turning it off. Mowing 2 times per week promotes better root growth and deters weed from sprouting.
